Resident Writing Tutor

Pam Newton has been the Pauli Murray Residential College Writing Tutor since 2020, working with undergraduates on writing projects and assignments of all kinds. She is also a Lecturer in the English department, teaching expository and creative non-fiction writing classes. 

Prior to coming to Yale, Pam spent a decade teaching in the Humanities faculty at Cooper Union and working in the Writing Center there, first as a tutor and later as the Humanities Writing Fellow and then the Director of the Writing Fellows Program. She has a BA in Drama from Northwestern University and an MA in English Literature from the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College.

Pam writes for magazines as an essayist and art/culture critic. Her articles have appeared in publications including The Atlantic, LitHub, The New York Times Magazine, The Huffington Post, and American Theatre. She has been a theatre critic for Time Out New York and a book critic for O the Oprah Magazine. She commutes to Yale from Brooklyn, where she lives with her husband and dog and can be found riding her bike, doing yoga, and leading reading groups at the Center for Fiction.
